While the United States got off to a win Sunday in World Cup qualifying, Panama and El Salvador posted victories that moved them closer to joining the Americans in a semifinal group.

Panama routed visiting St. Lucia 4-0 and El Salvador won 2-1 at home against Bermuda in other second-round games. On Saturday night, Jamaica played a 1-1 tie against Haiti in Miami.

The U.S. team opened with a 3-0 win over Grenada in Columbus, Ohio. The winners of the four home-and-home, total-goals series, which conclude next weekend, advance to one of three semifinal groups in the North and Central American and Caribbean region.

In other games Sunday, Canada defeated visiting Belize 4-0, Trinidad and Tobago won 2-0 at the Dominican Republic, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines gained a 2-2 tie at Nicaragua. In a late game, Barbados was at St. Kitts and Nevis.

In Panama City, Julio Dely Valdes, Luis Tejada, Ricardo Phillips and Robert Brown scored for Panama. In San Salvador, the hosts got goals from Jose Martinez in the 13th minute and Victor Velasquez in the 53rd around a tying goal by John Nusum in the 29th.

In Kingston, Ontario, Tomasz Radzinski, Paul Peschisolido, Kevin McKenna and Jim Brennan scored for Canada.

In Diriamba, Nicaragua got goals from Emilio Palacis (38th minute) and Rudel Calero (81st) to counter scores by Renzo Haynes (10th minute) and Shandel Samuel (45th).

In Santo Domingo, Marvin Andrews and Stern John scored in the second half for Trinidad and Tobago.

In other games Saturday it was Cuba 2, Costa Rica 2; Netherlands Antilles 1, Honduras 2; and Suriname 1, Guatemala 1.
